Group types detailed

Nwave Console provides split parking position groups on 3 different types:

  • Marked Spaces

  • Unmarked Bay (or Open Bay)

  • Car Counters

This document provides additional information on the distinctions between these various types of groups.

Marked Spaces

Marked Spaces is a group of parking sensors on a marked parking bay or parking lot

This group type is useful for plate parking or road side parkings with parallalel or perpendicular orientation.

Sensors must be place in center of each marked parking space:

  • Marked parallel roadside parking

  • Perpendicular roadside parking

  • Parking lot

These groups follow the principle: one sensor - one parking space. Occupancy of one parking sensor means that only one car occupies this sensor. The following picture demonstrates parking of 2 occupied and 2 free slots.

Unmarked Bay (or Open Bay)

Unmarked Bay type is used for unmarked parking bay or on-street parking. Positions in these groups must be placed closer to each other than in groups of marked spaces.

The difference in distance between marked and unmarked parking is illustrated on the following picture:

This approach allows to detect short and long vehicles with high precision. The following example shows how more tide-placed sensors enables to detect of vehicles of various size:

Also, the last image shows one specialty of Unmarked Bay groups - they have no constant capacity because the number of parking spaces depends on the manner and size of already parked vehicles.

The detection algorithm is not as easy as for Marked Spaces, but here we describe a short list of principles that enable to understand how Unmarked Bay occupancy is calculated:

  • neighbor 2 sensors which are occupied at the same time unite at the same parking session

  • 2 or 3 free sensors in the middle unite to single free spaces

  • a single free sensor in the middle is just ignored

  • a single free space on edge of group is interpreted as a full free space

Car Counters

Car Counters are a special type of parking, which is not as precious as the previous ones, but allows to use much simpler project infrastructure. This type is useful for restricted are with defined entrances and exists.

These groups are enabled to contain only positions with Car Counter devices. Car Counter is a parking sensor flashed by special firmware, which not only detects a vehicle above and sends the status “occupied” or “free”, but enumerates detected cars and sends this counter to Nwave Cloud.

One group must be equipped with at least 2 counters: one counter at the entrance and one - at the exit from the group. Each detected car increase or decrease the group occupancy in depend on which sensor has detected it.

Car Counter groups allow to adjust current capacity and occupancy by using API or analytics.nwave.io. You can read more about car counters on this page:
