Device Replacement

When device is damaged it needs to be replaced by a functional device. The same process is often needed for silent devices, which have not been sending data for a long time.

More specifically there are two types of situations where sensor needs to be replaced:

  1. Damaged status / Hardware error at Nwave portal OR in DM App

  2. Silent / “Last Message Time Error” in Nwave portal:

    1. not responding to DM app - Replace

    2. responding in DM Ap - update to the latest version of the firmware, calibrate, check hardware health status in DM app and device calibration messages in d.nwave.io > Raw Messages. If sensor shows healthy but no messages in console, try to check if other sensors nearby are communicating. Place replacement sensor close to sensor in question, calibrate it and see in if replacement sensor can reach the base station.

Mechanical Replacement

You will need a tamper proof Torx20 security screw driver or bit to take the old sensor off the platform (see below) and fix the new one.

In case if you are not going to replace a lot of devices at a time, you can:

  • Write down IDs of old devices and corresponding new devices IDs

  • After replacement calibrate new sensors via Device Management app

  • when you are back to the office, open up d.nwave.io console, find old device by ID (main menu: Device Management → Devices

  • go to a device page

  • enter corresponding replacement device ID and press button REPLACE

Replacement using a mobile App

Nwave provides an Android app specially designed for quick and efficient device replacement at scale. It is useful when you are physically near to damaged devices and have a few new devices for replacement. This application allows you not only find problematic devices and replace them but also detect problems. For example, if you are coming to a silent device you can determine reason of the problem and possibly you will see that you do not need to replace device but need to improve network coverage.

  1. You need to come to damaged/silent device location. You can find them using a map in the Replacement App.

  2. When you see a device which is damaged, you have to tap on the Search menu and enter Device ID:

  3. Tap on the button FIND

  4. If you see a device in a “Silent” or “Undetermined” state, the application offers you to determine problem. Determination process is a wizard that contains a few questions and testing a device via Bluetooth interface.

  5. If you want to replace device, it must me marked as damaged first. This can be done by finishing the wizard routine or if the device explicitly reported about hardware error. Damaged devices are marked by red pins and their dialogs contain button REPLACE

  6. On this stage, when you determined damaged device, you should physically replace the old damaged device by a new one.

  7. After taping on the REAPLCE button on the previous screen, the application shows to you a popup for entering replacement device ID. You can scan QR code on the device top or enter device ID manually.

  8. After QR code scanning the Replacement app automatically runs the new device calibration. If calibration will be finished successfully, the red button with a wrench icon becomes green. You can re-run calibration process by tapping on the button with a wrench icon.

  9. Done, the device is completely replaced.
